Women In Leadership Means More Profit For Companies

Did you know that public companies in the top quartile for gender diversity are more likely to have financial returns above national medians? Gender diversity creates opportunity for a variety of skills including recruitment, viewpoints, decision making and customer relationships. The bottom line is, women and men excel in different areas and having both in leadership positions can benefit a corporation. Women in the workplace have come a long way. In fact, according to a Pew Study, in 2013 approximately 52.2% of managerial positions were held by women.

Is America Suppressing The Ambition Of Women In The Workplace?

Although we are seeing more and more powerful women compared to the past decades, it has been a difficult battle. According to the Harvard Business Review, “women with two years or less of work experience slightly led men in ambition by 11%, but for women who had more than two years on the job, aspiration and confidence plummeted 60%”.

So what factors are draining women’s ambition? Shockingly, it is not marriage or children. Responses in the Pew Study reveal that the top barrier factors include:

  • 43% of respondents agreed that women are held to higher standards
  • 43% of respondents agreed that companies are not ready to hire women leaders
  • 20% of respondents agreed that lack of connections
  • 9% of respondents agreed that women aren’t tough enough
  • 7% of respondents agreed that women aren’t as good at being managers
